The Voice of College: The Freshmen Experience Book Released in Time for High School Graduates

Ames, IA.- With the excitement of high school graduation around the corner, many students are also finding it’s the right time to begin their preparation for college.  From figuring out where they’ll go to where they will live when they arrive, there are many decisions these students will be making in the upcoming months.  As the costs associated with college continue to rise, many are looking for additional guidance to ensure this large investment is not wasted.

Dr. Michael Severin and Kipp Van Dyke have witnessed thousands of college students experience both the joys and struggles associated with the transition to college over their years working as students and professionals on college campuses’.  They began to write their observations and tips down and these became a very helpful guide for students making the transition to college.  This past August their book, “The Voice of College: The Freshmen Experience” was released.  This 444 page success manual is a practical, easy-to-read resource packed with helpful insights and advice for high school students and their families as they prepare to depart for college and continue through their first year of college.

“There are so many things to be thinking about in the months prior to college, but sometimes people don’t know where to look.” Van Dyke said. “As we wrote the book, we tried to make it as simple and straightforward as possible.  The book walks you through the first year of college, starting with the summer before you arrive.  We made it fun to read with great illustrations and very useable lists and tips.”
Students aren’t the only ones going through a transition.  Sometimes the individuals having the hardest time with the adjustment are the family members watching their students leave.  Severin added, “We’ve found that the more realistic information family members had about the transition, the smoother it was for everyone.  Family support throughout this process helps make what could be a stressful process become a relaxing experience.”
